2023 Hana 1Q K League 1 Round 6 Preview

league 2023.04.07   I   hits 927

Round 6 of the Hana 1Q K League 1 sees a number of sides still trying to shift their season into gear and none more so than in the clash between Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors and Incheon United. Elsewhere, recently promoted sides Daejeon Hana Citizen look to continue their bright start against Suwon FC and Pohang respectively, while Ulsan Hyundai hope to maintain their 100% record as they host Suwon Samsung Bluewings this Saturday.

Alternative Match of the Round

Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors Vs. Incheon United, Sun. 9th April -16:30

The pressure continues to mount on Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors manager Kim Sang-sik as they saw their one-goal lead slip at the hands of Pohang Steelers last weekend. Once again, the side were unable to capitalise on their early dominance as Ryu Jae-moon's deflected effort was eventually cancelled out by Baek Sung-dong and then Zeca in the final moments of the match. The Green Warriors currently have just one win in their opening five matches, having lost three and find themselves already 11 points off the division's summit.

Their opposition this weekend, Incheon United, have also had somewhat of a shaky start, also recording one win and currently sit above Jeonbuk in the table by one point. While they have scored as many as the Green Warriors (5), they have conceded the most in the league (10) and will be concerned about their defence being their downfall in a stadium that Incheon have been unable to keep a clean sheet in since 2015.

Of the 53 times these two teams have met across all competitions, Jeonbuk has 21 wins to Incheon's 13. In their four meetings last season, Jeonbuk edged two victories while Incheon chalked up one with the other being a tie. Playing here last in Final A, Jeonbuk won by two goals to one thanks to a Cho Gue-sung brace while Kim Min-seok picked up the consolation for Incheon.

Team of the Round

Daejeon Hana Citizen (Vs. Suwon FC, Away, Sun. 9th April - 15:00)

Daejeon Hana Citizen continued with their smooth return to the top flight as they maintained their unbeaten start to the season last weekend against FC Seoul. An Osmar own goal, forced by Daejeon's Tiago, followed by a header from Cho Yu-min, propelled the Citizens into a 2-0 lead after just twenty minutes yet they saw their advantage quickly disappear through efforts from Iljutcenko and Na Sang-ho. However, the Purples persevered in the penultimate minute thanks to Masatoshi Ishida. The Japanese midfielder had played a considerable role all match and was on hand to volley home Kim In-gyun's low cross into the box to help Daejeon move up into 2nd and bring them up to eleven goals for the campaign so far, the joint highest.

Against Suwon FC this weekend, Daejeon face a side that have not enjoyed the strongest of starts to the season and the Purples will be hoping they can capitalise to their advantage as they look to maintain their superb start to the season.

Player of the Round

Baek Sung-dong, Pohang Steelers (Vs. Gwangju FC, Sat. 8th April - 19:00)

Having finally made the switch to the top flight in the winter after coming close to promotion with FC Anyang, Baek Sung-dong made the difference for his new club Pohang Steelers last week in considerable style as he came on from off the bench and relished the challenge presented by that of K League heavyweights Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.

Collecting the ball in the box, Baek made good of what looked initially like a heavy first touch to take it away from the defenders, catching up with the loose ball and tucking it beyond the 'keeper. His influence then continued until the dying minutes as he played in the cross to set up the winner from Zeca, earning a well-earned three points on the club's 50th anniversary no less.

Having faced Gwangju last season while playing in the second tier, Baek will be hoping to show his influence on proceedings once more this weekend.

Elsewhere in K League 1 Round 6

K League 1 kicks things off on Saturday at 2pm as the reigning Champions Ulsan Hyundai welcome Suwon Samsung Bluewings to town as they look to maintain their perfect start to the campaign. Suwon meanwhile will be hoping to find their first win of the season as they struggle in eleventh position.

Following that match, FC Seoul take on Daegu FC in the Match of the Round as the capital club look to bounce back from a dramatic defeat to Daejeon with a result over the Sky Blues. Then, in the evening, Pohang Steelers take on Gwangju FC at the Steel Yard as both teams look to continue their promising early form.

Sunday sees things start in Suwon as Suwon FC welcome a high-flying Dajeon to town before Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors take on Incheon United in our alternative match of the round. The weekend then rounds off with Jeju United's trip to Gangwon FC as the Tangerines look to lift themselves off the foot of the table.
