2024 Hana Bank K League 1 Round 38 Final B Preview

league 2024.11.21   I   조회수 1451

It's the last day of the 2024 Hana Bank K League 1 season. Daegu FC host Incheon United looking for a first win in Final B with the playoffs looming, a now-safe Daejeon Hana Citizen take on Jeju United, and Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors will be looking to build on the win last time out when heading to Gwangju FC with playoff matches still to come. All matches kick off at 2 PM KST on Sunday 24th November.

Final B Match of the Round

Daegu FC (11th) vs. Incheon United (12th)

It'll be another sellout at DGB Daegu Bank Park this Sunday when Daegu FC take on Incheon United. The Sky Blues will be looking to use their passionate support to build momentum heading into the playoffs, while also bouncing back from the 3-1 loss to Jeonbuk last time out and earn a first win in Final B. For Incheon United, after the heartbreak of relegation being confirmed last time out, Sunday's match will be about ending the season on a high and giving the fans something to be optimistic about heading into next season, in what will be the Durumi's last K League 1 match for at least a year.

Daegu currently sit in 11th place and so would face K League 2 runners-up Chungnam Asan if they fail to better Jeonbuk's result. Should the Sky Blues leapfrog Jeonbuk then it'd be a match against either Seoul E-Land or Jeonnam Dragons.

Incheon striker Stefan Mugoša is set to end the season as the K League 1 top scorer with at least 15 but will want to add to his tally and ensure the accolade is his. The Montenegro international has one goal more than FC Seoul's Stanislav Iljutcenko but the latter is suspended for the final match of the season. The only player who can realistically catch Mugoša is Gangwon's Lee Sang-heon with 13. Elsewhere, if Matej Jonjic is available, then it will be the Croatian centre back's 100th K League appearance.

The 2024 meetings have yielded two draws and one Incheon win. The most recent in August at DGB Daegu Bank Park ended in a 2-1 Incheon win with goals from Stefan Mugoša and Kim Do-hyeok, after Jeong Chi-in had given Daegu the lead. It remains Incheon's most recent away win.

Final B Team of the Round

Daejeon Hana Citizen (vs. Jeju United)

Now safe from relegation following the 2-1 away win over Incheon United in Round 37, Daejeon Hana Citizen will be free to enjoy their last match of the campaign. The Purples host Jeju United for their last match of the campaign, a side that they've been unable to overcome in 2024. From the three league meetings, including the Islanders' visit to Purple Arena in May, not to mention a penalty shootout loss in the Korea Cup in June, it's been a clean sweep of Jeju victories. But Daejeon are the form team in Final B, winning three and drawing one from four games with only one goal conceded. Jeju, too, are unbeaten but have amassed eight points to Daejeon's 10.

Daejeon boast of one of the best shooting accuracies in the division, ranking fourth overall, and have continued that level of sharpshooting in Final B. In terms of efficiency, in games where Daejeon have found the back of the net, Hwang Sun-hong's men are averaging a 42% conversion rate of goals from shots on target. Some lineup changes will be expected this Sunday as Victor Bobsin and Anton Kryvotsyuk are both suspended. Should Ju Se-jong feature, it'll be the midfielder's 200th K League 1 appearance. A win for Daejeon could move them up a place, level with their final league position in 2023. It would also match the number of wins from last year with 12.

Final B Player of the Round

Lee Seung-woo, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors (vs. Gwangju FC)

Doing what Lee Seung-woo does better than most, the attacking midfielder came off the bench to score a crucial goal last time out. In Jeonbuk's 3-1 win over Daegu FC, Lee Seung-woo made his presence felt by laying on an assist for Kwon Chang-hoon to make it 2-0 on 86 minutes, before starting and ending an attack to add Jeonbuk's third four minutes later. It was Lee's second goal for Jeonbuk - first since September - but 12th of the campaign, and fifth assist in a Jeonbuk shirt, his seventh of the season overall.

Jeonbuk earning their first win of Final B is timely given that the Promotion-Relegation Playoffs beckon next weekend. Should Jeonbuk finish 10th, it'll be one of Seoul E-Land, or Jeonnam Dragons, instead of Chungnam Asan should the Green Warriors finish 11th. Lee finding form also comes at a convenient time for Jeonbuk, considering that the 26-year-old has experienced the Promotion-Relegation playoffs before. Jeonbuk face an already safe Gwangju away on the final day, before their first playoff game on December 1st.
