At the 2024 K League Award Ceremony in Seoul on Friday 29th November, K League handed out the awards for MVP, Manager of the Year, Young Player of the Year, and Best XI.

K League 1 Young Player of the Year

Yang Min-hyuk (Gangwon FC)

Gangwon FC’s rising star Yang Min-hyuk was named the 2024 K League 1 Young Player of the Year, receiving nearly unanimous votes with 11 votes from coaches, 10 from team captains, and 115 from the media.

A product of Gangwon’s youth system, Yang Min-hyuk made his K League debut this season under a semi-professional contract. Starting as a regular from the opening match, he notched an assist just 32 seconds in and went on to play in all 38 matches, scoring 12 goals and providing six assists.

Yang shattered Gangwon’s youngest records in appearances, goals, and goal contributions, establishing himself as the club’s next big talent. Mid-season, he transitioned to a full professional contract. His consistent performance throughout the season helped Gangwon secure a runner-up finish, and he earned an MVP nomination in his debut season.

Yang became only the second player in K League history to win Young Player of the Year during their rookie season, following Kim Min-jae (then of Jeonbuk) in 2017.

Additionally, Gangwon has now produced three Young Player of the Year winners: Kim Ji-hyun in 2019, Yang Hyun-joon in 2022, and Yang Min-hyuk in 2024. Alongside Pohang (Go Moo-yeol, Kim Seung-dae, Song Min-kyu), Gangwon holds the record for the most winners in this category.

K League 1 Manager of the Year

Yoon Jung-hwan (Gangwon FC)

Gangwon’s head coach Yoon Jung-hwan received the 2024 K League 1 Manager of the Year Award for leading his team to a remarkable season. Under Yoon’s leadership, Gangwon played 38 matches, achieving 19 wins, seven draws, and 12 losses. This culminated in a runner-up finish, the club’s best result in its 16-year history.

Yoon received balanced support, with seven votes each from coaches and captains, and 89 votes from the media. Yoon joined Gangwon in June 2023, midway through a season in which the team was on the brink of relegation. He guided them to survival through the Promotion-Relegation Playoffs and followed this achievement by orchestrating a dramatic turnaround, leading Gangwon to second place this season.

Despite a slow start to 2024, with no wins in the first four rounds, Gangwon found momentum by Round 13 with a five-match winning streak. This was followed by additional winning streaks in Rounds 24–27 (four matches) and Rounds 33–35 (three matches). In the final match of the season, they secured the runner-up position by defeating Pohang 1-0.

This marked the fourth time in K League 1 history that a manager from a non-championship winning team won Manager of the Year, following Kim Gi-dong (Pohang, 2020), Park Kyung-hoon (Jeju, 2010), and Jang Woi-ryong (Incheon, 2005).

K League 1 MVP

Jo Hyeon-woo (Ulsan)

The 2024 K League 1 MVP was Jo Hyeon-woo of Ulsan HD. The goalkeeper received eight votes from coaches, seven from captains, and 75 from the media, earning strong support across all categories.

Jo has been Ulsan’s first-choice goalkeeper since joining the club in 2020, following his professional debut with Daegu in 2013. This season, he played every minute of all 38 matches, conceding 40 goals and keeping 14 clean sheets. Jo was named Round MVP twice and selected for the Best XI 11 times, contributing significantly to Ulsan’s third consecutive league title.

Known for his performances in the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups, Jo continues to serve as the South Korean national team’s primary goalkeeper. Jo’s MVP award makes him the first goalkeeper to win this honor in 16 years, following Lee Woon-jae (Suwon) in 2008. Ulsan has now produced three consecutive MVPs, with Lee Chung-yong (2022) and Kim Young-gwon (2023) preceding Jo.

Anderson of Suwon FC, who won the Top Assists Award, finished second in MVP voting with 20.26 points, while Yang Min-hyuk of Gangwon was third with 16.38 points.

K League 1 Top Scorer Award

The K League 1 Top Scorer Award went to Stefan Mugoša of Incheon United. This season, Mugoša played in all 38 of Incheon's matches and scored 15 goals.

Mugosa’s outstanding performance began in Round 3 with a multi-goal game against Ulsan, and he maintained impressive form throughout the season. He scored 11 goals with his right foot, 1 with his left foot, and 3 with his head, showcasing his versatility in attack. Mugosa also displayed consistency by scoring 6 goals at home and 9 on the road.

As a result, Mugosa was responsible for nearly half of Incheon’s total goals (38) this season, solidifying his role as a key attacking threat for the team.

Mugosa first joined Incheon in 2018, debuting in the K League that year. Aside from a one-year stint with J-League club Vissel Kobe from the summer of 2022 to the summer of 2023, he has spent seven seasons in the K League as a veteran striker. This season marked Mugosa’s second-highest personal goal tally, following his 19 goals in 2018, and his first time winning the Top Scorer Award.

Additionally, this is the first time in four years that a foreign player has won the K League 1 Top Scorer Award, the last being Junior (Ulsan) in 2020. Incheon also celebrated its second-ever Top Scorer Award winner, with the first being Yoo Byung-soo in 2010, 14 years ago.

K League 1 Top Assists Award

The K League 1 Top Assists Award went to Anderson of Suwon FC. In his debut season in the K League, Anderson played all 38 matches for Suwon FC, scoring seven goals and delivering 13 assists. His 20 total goal contributions led all players in K League 1 this season.

Anderson recorded his first assist in Round 4 against Gimcheon, making an almost immediate impact. He then claimed the lead in assists by teeing up a teammate in three consecutive games from Rounds 11 to 13. By maintaining steady form for the remainder of the season, Anderson secured the Top Assists Award.

Notably, Anderson was the only player in K League 1 to reach double-digit assists this season. He is also the first foreign player to win the Top Assists Award in six years, the last being Cesinha (Daegu) in 2018 In his first season, Anderson emerged as one of the league’s top playmakers, earning a nomination for MVP as a result of his stellar performances.
