After sudden snowstorms saw both legs pushed back 24 hours, Monday evening sees Suwon FC looking to overcome Bucheon FC 1995's 1-0 lead to maintain their place in the first division for another season. However, with the prospect of K League 1 for the first time in their history, the visitors will be doing all they can to ensure their slender advantage is maintained.
First Leg
Originally scheduled for Thursday evening, sudden heavy snowfall saw play postponed at kick-off for 24 hours. When proceedings finally got underway on Friday night, however, fans were treated to an exciting, tightly-contested affair.
Bucheon had early shouts for a penalty just three minutes into the match after Suwon midfielder Lee Jae-won looked to have fouled Thiago, yet video review overruled the original decision much to the relief of the travelling support.
Han Chan-hee then threatened for the visitors, seeing his shot from range deflected onto the upright just after a quarter of an hour on the clock. Suwon continued to create opportunities throughout the half but were rarely troubled the Bucheon back line.
They were missed opportunities the travelling side would quickly rue as, shortly after the interval, Bucheon's Rodrigo Bassani powered one past goalkeeper Ahn Joon-soo to give the second-tier side the lead. It was the striker's 15th goal of the campaign and one that could well prove to be his most important.
Bassani nearly doubled his tally on the hour mark with an audacious chip from range, forcing Ahn a backtracking Joon-soo to claw it from crossing the goalline.
Suwon piled on the pressure for the final 30 minutes but were continuously denied by goalkeeper Kim Hyeong-keun. Luan Dias had a moment to level things with minutes to spare, but his effort deflected off the woodwork, leaving his side with it all to do at the Suwon Sports Complex on Monday evening.
Recent Form
Following Friday's win, Bucheon have stretched their unbeaten run to nine matches, although it did also prove to be their first win in three after two goalless draws in both their last game of the season and previous playoff match with Seongnam. They also have six clean sheets in a row, but this has come at the expense of goals, with just four scored over the same period.
For Suwon FC, Friday's result means they have not tasted victory in their last eight matches. More worryingly for Kim Eun-jung's side, they picked up just one point in the Final B fixtures and scored just twice. For a team that boasts the highest goals scored tally in the bottom half with 51, their sudden inability to convert is worrying.
Head-to-Head
Last Friday's encounter was the first time the pair had faced each other since 2000, back when both were in the second tier. Suwon FC won that last encounter but this fixture historically has a slight tendency to fall in favour of Bucheon, with them winning 12 to Suwon's 11, although seven of which have come in the last ten encounters.
Key Players
Luan Dias
While he may well still be ruing the missed opportunity late on in the first leg, Luan Dias has been one of the most influential figures at Suwon this season, helping to drive their mid-season revival from the foot of the table and continuously posing a threat on set pieces. While his goal tally of five may seem modest, it his ability to bring others into play and dictate the tempo where he has proven useful, and his manager will be hoping he can do this once more to great effect on Monday evening.
Rodrigo Bassani
Another goal to his campaign tally in Friday's first ensures Rodrigo Bassani as one of the standout talents to keep an eye on heading into this second leg. With 15 goals for the year, not to mention six assists, the 28-year-old has had an impressive campaign. However, having only scored once in the five previous outings, it will be a relief to the Bucheon faithful that he may have refound his touch at the side's most critical juncture.
