2022 K League 2 Review: Goalkeeper Top Threes

league 2022.12.22   I   조회수 877

The end-of-season review moves into K League 2 now and starts with the goalkeeper top threes.

Total Saves

Naturally, some goalkeepers will be busier than others. Their teams might cede position more than others in the division, some might just not have the strongest of defences in front of them. The result will be similar in that they will face more shots and, therefore, be needed to make more saves. Playoff finalists FC Anyang had Jeong Min-ki between the sticks for them in 2022 and despite another impressive season for the Violets, Jeong faced the most saves at 126. Behind him was another goalkeeper from a playoff-reaching team - Choi Cheol-won of Bucheon FC 1995 who faced 118. In third was Seoul E-Land's Yoon Bo-sang at 106.

1. Jeong Min-ki, FC Anyang - 126
2. Choi Cheol-won, Bucheon FC 1995 - 118
3. Yoon Bo-sang, Seoul E-Land - 106

Saves Per 90 Minutes

The top three for saves per 90 minutes looks a bit different, however. This metric shows exactly which custodians were the busiest, on average, in matches that they played. What can skew this stat is that players with a low number of appearances will rank near the top. 10 matches or more. Busan's Ahn Jun-su was the busiest with 3.78 saves per month, followed by Gyeongnam's Son Jung-hyun with 3.69, and Lim Min-hyeok of Jeonnam Dragons with 3.55.

1. Ahn Jun-su, Busan IPark - 3.78
2. Son Jung-hyun, Gyeongnam FC - 3.69
3. Lim Min-hyeok, Jeonnam Dragons - 3.35

Saves with reflexes accuracy percentage

But which 'keepers were the most agile and produced the most saved with reflexes? Jeonnam custodian Lim Min-hyeok topped this metric with 76.74% followed by Ansan Greeners' Lee Seung-bin at 64.76% and Lee Sang-wook of K League debutants Gimpo FC at 62.89%. The busiest goalkeepers of K League 2 in 2022 were at teams in the bottom half of the table.

1. Lim Min-hyeok, Jeonnam Dragons - 76.74%
2. Lee Seung-bin, Ansan Greeners - 64.76%
3. Lee Sang-wook, Gimpo FC - 62.89%

Prevented Goals

A goalkeeper is there as the last line of defence and, ultimately, to stop goals from going in. Yoon Bo-sang of Seoul E-Land prevented the most at 8.44 followed by Bucheon's Choi Cheol-won at 7.02 and then Busan's Ahn Jun-su at 4.79.

1. Yoon Bo-sang, Seoul E-Land - 8.44
2. Choi Cheol-won, Bucheon FC 1995 - 7.02
3. Ahn Jun-su, Busan IPark - 4.79

Leaving Line

Sometimes a 'keeper needs to leave their goalmouth or penalty area in order to make a key intervention. Some are better at timing these onrushes than others. Some goalkeepers do so reluctantly so not to get stuck in "no man's land", while others are keen to show their burst of pace. Jeong Min-ki of Anyang left his line the most with 76 occasions being counted. His Line 4 Derby rival Lee Seung-bin of Ansan Greeners was next at 67, followed by Choi Cheol-won at 65. Clearly, the place to be to see goalkeepers spring to life and come out of their goalmouth is the Seoul capital region.

1. Jeong Min-ki, FC Anyang - 76
2. Lee Seung-bin, Ansan Greeners - 67
3. Choi Cheol-won, Bucheon FC 1995 - 65

Catches

The phrase "a safe pair of hands" is often used to describe a reliable and steady goalkeeper. Being able to catch the ball is a fundamental skill for any goalkeeper. Some, though, are better at it than others. The "safe hands" of K League 2, then, appears to be Anyang's Jeong Min-ki who made 59 catches in 2022, followed by Gyeongnam's Son Jung-hyun and Lee Seung-bin of Ansan both with 46.

1. Jeong Min-ki, FC Anyang - 59
2. Son Jung-hyun, Gyeongnam FC - 46
2. Lee Seung-bin, Ansan Greeners - 46

Punches

In an ideal world, you'd want to get a firm grip on the ball and bring it into your chest and into safety but that's not always possible. In some situations, such as a crowded box or when you want to try and get the ball back upfield as quickly as possible, punching is the best thing to do. As well as showing his adeptness with catching, Jeong Min-ki can also punch and did so 61 times in fact in 2022 to sit top of this metric. Joint top, at least, as Choi Cheol-won also recorded 61 punches. Gimpo's Lee Sang-wook was next at 56.

1. Jeong Min-ki, FC Anyang - 61
1. Choi Cheol-won, Bucheon FC - 61
2. Lee Sang-wook, Gimpo FC - 56

Aerial Clearances

The opposition win a corner as a last throw of the dice, their fans sense that this might be the moment their team finally gets on the scoresheet. But your goalkeeper rises up above everyone else in a congested penalty area and calmly clears the ball to safety. There's a sigh of relief and the feeling that the game is yours now. In this kind of situation, you might want Lee Seung-bin in your team as made the most aerial clearances at 46. Failing that there's Daejeon's Lee Chang-geun at 44 or Bucheon's Choi Cheol-won at 40.

1. Lee Seung-bin, Ansan Greeners - 46
2. Lee Chang-geun, Daejeon Hana Citizen - 44
3. Choi Cheol-won, Bucheon FC 1995 - 40
