Preview: Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors Vs. Pohang Steelers

league 2022.09.29   I   조회수 780

Saturday evening sees Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors continue in their title chase against an in-form Pohang Steelers side that are hoping to improve on the third-place position they currently find themselves in. With nothing separating the two sides in their three encounters this season, this Round 34 fixture looks set to be the marquee match of the weekend.

Recent Form

Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors enter the weekend's fixtures off the back of three consecutive wins and six unbeaten as they try to catch Ulsan Hyundai in first who sit ahead of them by five points in the table. Their last outing prior to the international break was an entertaining affair away to Suwon Samsung Bluewings in an encounter that saw them fight from a goal down to secure a 3-2 win thanks to second-half strikes from Modou Barrow (2) and Choe Gue-seung.

Pohang Steelers also enter this fixture on reasonable from, picking up seven points in their last three, but were only able to muster a draw against bottom-of-the-table Seongnam FC last time out. Having gone a goal down in the early exchanges, the Steelers found an equaliser with just over ten minutes via midfielder Wanderson to share the spoils.

Team News

Jeonbuk manager Kim Sang-sik has been without a number of players during this international break with Kim Jin-su, Paik Seung-ho, Kim Moon-hwan, Song Beum-keun and Cho Gue-seung all returning to the club after time with the Korean National Team. Worryingly for Kim, striker Cho picked up an injury in training while on international duty and there are doubts over his availability heading into this weekend.

As for Pohang, manager Kim Ki-dong had no players called up to the senior Korean side but young midfielder Goh Young-joon was on duty with the Olympic squad for their 1-1 draw with Uzbekistan last Monday.

Head-to-Head

This Saturday's encounter between this pair of teams is the 93rd across all competitions during which Jeonbuk has narrowly came out on top 37 times to Pohang's 32. This season, there has been little to separate the two with a win apiece and a draw across their three meetings.

Pohang's last trip to Jeonju came just over a month ago with both sides playing out a 2-2 draw. Jeonbuk, having returned from a gruelling AFC Champions League knockout phase, fell behind Pohang early into the second half thanks to two quickfire goals from Shin Jin-ho and Jeong Jae-hee before fighting back through efforts from Gustavo and Paik Seung-ho to rescue a point for the Champions.

What to Watch

Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors' Modou Barrow

With five goals in Jeonbuk's last three matches, three games in which the side has claimed maximum points it should be added, one man has been crucial. Modou Barrow is in sensational form for Jeonbuk at the moment just when the club needs him most. Not only that, but the Gambian international is not only having his best season in the K League since arriving in 2020, but also arguably a career-best. So far, Barrow has scored 11 times in 24 appearances and assisted five, numbers that have seen him nominated for the September Player of the Month.

Barrow has also built a reputation of delivering for Jeonbuk in the tail end of seasons with crucial goals, having scored a winner against Ulsan late in 2020 before finding the net again against the Horangi two weeks later in the FA Cup final to help his team to win their first domestic 'double'. Can the winger continue his rich vein of form into Final A and turn the title race on its head once more?

Pohang Steelers' Shin Jin-ho

Another player vying for the September Player of the Month award is Pohang's midfield maestro Shin Jin-ho. Shin scored once last month but made five assists, three of which came in the team's comprehensive 4-1 victory over Daegu FC. In addition to this, the midfielder also found the back of the net against Jeonbuk back in August's 2-2 draw, albeit with the help of a deflection.

Shin continues to feature highly across the passing statistics in K League 1 and has proved crucial to the construction of chances for the Steelers, playing a pivotal role in the side's fine September form that sees them in third. With hopes of still potentially climbing into second though during these final five games, can the midfielder captain his side to what would be an important three points against the Champions?
