Prevew: Suwon FC Vs. Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors

league 2022.05.18   I   조회수 993

This Sunday's K League 1 Marquee Match sees a free-scoring yet struggling Suwon FC play host to a title-defending Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors side still finding it difficult to get into gear in front of goal. With both teams looking to turn around their fortunes, who will find joy when they meet this weekend?

Recent Form

Suwon FC fielded a starting eleven featuring a few rotations as they lined up against a Seongnam FC side currently struggling at the bottom of the table. Suwon found themselves 2-0 down within an hour but rallied with a goal from Jeong Dong-ho and an own goal from the Magpies' Kim Min-hyeok. With results going against them elsewhere though, Suwon still dropped down to 11th in the table.

Wednesday evening also saw a rotated Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors side head to the Steel Yard to face Pohang Steelers in a match where they claimed a 1-0 win and extended their unbeaten run to seven league games. Takahiro Kunimoto scored the match's only goal, converting Stanislav Iljutcenko’s deflected shot on 16 minutes in an encounter that mostly saw the Champions withstand a second-half onslaught from the hosts. The victory saw the Green Warriors move up to third.

Team News

Having made changes midweek, Suwon FC manager Kim Do-kyun may look to revert back to his preferred 4-3-3 shape to include the likes of Lars Veldwijk back in his starting eleven. Goalkeeper Yoo Hyun may also be reinstated having sat out of Wednesday's fixture to make way for Park Bae-jong. Doubts remain over the availability of Hwang Soon-min and former Jeonbuk midfielder Murilo, whilst centre-back Lachlan Jackson misses the game after accumulating five yellow cards.

Jeonbuk manager Kim Sang-sik seems likely to also reinstate most of the eleven that featured the weekend prior having rested key names such as Paik Seung-ho, Han Kyo-won and Kim Bo-kyung midweek. The squad is mostly fit though and there are no suspensions for the side heading into the weekend.

Head-to-Head

These two sides meet for the tenth time across all competitions this weekend, with Jeonbuk edging the encounters by four wins to Suwon’s two. These two sides last met on the opening day of the season, with Jeonbuk running out 1-0 winners thanks to a Song Min-kyu goal.

However, Suwon FC proved to be somewhat of a tricky prospect for the Champions last season, being the only side not to taste defeat against Jeonbuk for the campaign. Suwon also won both home games against the Green Warriors in 2021, even if their second home match was at the temporary location of Suwon World Cup Stadium.

What to Watch

Attack Vs. Defence

Suwon FC manager Kim Do-kyun has built up a reputation for pursuing attacking football with his side being the second-highest scorers in the league with 19 goals. This follows last season where their return to the top-flight saw them finish with the third-highest goal-tally. Given the attacking talents of Lars Veldwijk, Lee Seung-woo and Kim Hyun, the manager is certainly playing to his squad's strengths but has seen it take a negative toll at the back.

At present, Suwon FC find themselves second from bottom having conceded 25, a tally only beaten by 12th placed Seongnam with 26. The leaky defence is nothing new to Kim, with his side also recording a negative goal difference last year despite the aforementioned goals scored, but in this campaign, it is proving to be more of a predicament. With Lachlan Jackson suspended for the weekend, things may well continue in this manner on Sunday

Fortunately for the hosts, Suwon face a Jeonbuk side that are finding goals uncharacteristically hard to come by, having scored just 14 for the campaign, slightly under their expected goals of 14.55. For the Green Warriors, it is their defence that has been maintaining their title pursuit this season, having only conceded on nine occasions, the joint best in the division. Can the visitors hold out once more against the goal-scoring threat of Suwon or will the hosts' worrisome defence allow the Champions troubled attack to start building up their tally?
