2023 K League 1 Top Threes

league 2023.10.14   I   조회수 2131

With the regular season finished and Final Round all that's left to play in K League 1 this season, we do some number crunching, look at the data, and see which players have performed the best.

Goalkeeping

Total shots faced

The busiest three goalkeepers are all from teams that are in Final B with Daejeon's Lee Chang-geun having faced the most shots, followed by Kim Dong-jun, and Yang Hyung-mo. It's perhaps not too surprising to see that the same three goalkeepers make up the top three when it comes to total saves.

1. Lee Chang-geun, Daejeon Hana Citizen - 174
2. Kim Dong-jun, Jeju United - 163
3. Yang Hyung-mo, Suwon Samsung Bluewings - 145

Total saves

1. Lee Chang-geun, Daejeon Hana Citizen - 122
2. Kim Dong-jun, Jeju United - 119
3. Yang Hyung-mo, Suwon Samsung Bluewings - 97

Saves with reflexes accuracy

But in terms of saves with reflexed accuracy, FC Seoul's young goalkeeper Baek Jong-beom sits first, Suwon FC's No Dong-geon is second, and Daejeon's Lee Chang-geun is third. Again, all three are on the books of teams in Final B. A reflex save can be defined as a save from a shot from close range, where the goalkeeper has to react immediately, using his reflexes.

1. Baek Jong-beom, FC Seoul - 77.36%
2. No Dong-geon, Suwon FC - 63.64%
3. Lee Chang-geun, Daejeon Hana Citizen - 63.11%

Prevented goals

When it comes to prevented goals, though, Daejeon's Lee Chang-geun is joined by two of his other contemporaries, Kim Kyung-min of Gwangju FC, and Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors' Kim Jeong-hoon. Kim Kyung-min is well ahead at 7.35, followed by Kim Jeong-hoon of Jeonbuk at 2.74, who is just ahead of Lee Chang-geun at 2.07.

Prevented goals takes into account expected goals on target (xGOT) and will assign a score to an attempt on goal depending on where it would have ended up. For example, if it is heading for the top corner then this is more likely to have resulted in a goal that was hit straight down the middle at a comfortable height. The higher the prevented goals value, the more shots a 'keeper has saved that he was not expected to.

1. Kim Kyung-min, Gwangju FC - 7.35
2. Kim Jeong-hoon, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors - 2.74
3. Lee Chang-geun, Daejeon Hana Citizen - 2.07

Defending

Defensive duels won

Moving further up the pitch into the back line, the hardest-working defenders seem to be on the books of clubs in the bottom half of the table. In fact, the three defenders who have won the most defensive duels all play for clubs in the current bottom three. Hugo Gomes, a summer recruit for Suwon FC, is top with 78.8% but only just as Jang Ho-ik of Suwon Bluewings is only 0.5% behind. Gangwon FC's Marko Tuci is third at 77.19%. That extra one percent could be enough to prevent a team from being relegated automatically.

1. Hugo Gomes, Suwon FC - 78.8%
2. Jang Ho-ik, Suwon Samsung Bluewings - 78.3%
3. Marko Tuci, Gangwon FC - 77.19%

Interceptions

Of course, sniffing out the danger and picking the ball up before even having to enter a defensive duel means a team can win the ball higher up the pitch and even start a counterattack. Daegu FC seem to be good at this and have two players in the top three - Hong Jong-won and Jo Jin-woo with 200 and 182 respectively. Osmar Ibanez of FC Seoul is second with 192. For Daegu this could prove key in qualifying for the AFC Champions League next term, for Seoul it could ensure a positive end to the campaign.

1. Hong Jeong-un, Daegu FC - 200
2. Osmar Ibanez, FC Seoul - 192
3. Jo Jin-woo, Daegu FC - 182

Shots blocked

If an attacker does slip through and is gearing up to shoot then sometimes you just have to get your body in the way and block the shot. Kim Young-bin of Gangwon FC has made the most blocks in the division so far this season, followed by Daegu's Hong Jeong-un and his DGB Daegu Bank Park teammate Kim Jin-kyuk.

1. Kim Young-bin, Gangwon FC - 32
2. Hong Jeong-un, Daegu FC - 29
3. Kim Jin-hyuk, Daegu FC - 26

Construction

Passing accuracy

Away from defending and when in possession, keeping hold of the ball means the opposition is unable to score. FC Seoul's Kim Ju-sung seems to understand this more than most as an impressive 96.1% of his passes have found their intended target. Ulsan Hyundai midfielder Kim Min-hyeok is second with just under 96% while Jeju United centre back Yeon Je-woon rounds off the top three at 94.3%.

1. Kim Ju-sung, FC Seoul - 96.1%
2. Kim Min-hyeok, Ulsan Hyundai - 95.8%
3. Yeon Je-woon, Jeju United - 94.3%

Through passing accuracy

There's little use in trying to pass the ball through into attacking areas of the pitch if they're not going to be accurate. Luckily for Pohang Steelers, Gwangju FC, and Incheon United, they have players who excel at finding that killer pass. Brazilian striker Zeca is first in the league in this regard at 64% accuracy of his through passes, Lee Hee Kyun of Gwangju is next at a touch over 61%, and Incheon's Paul-Jose M'Poku. It's perhaps of little surprise to discover that their teams sit second, third, and sixth in the table.

1. Zeca, Pohang Steelers - 64%
2. Lee Hee-kyun, Gwangju FC - 61.1%
3. Paul-Jose M'Poku, Incheon United - 56.5%

Key passes

A key pass is a pass that leads to a shot on goal. Na Sang-ho of FC Seoul has done those more than any other player in K League 1 this season with 20 but Pohang's Kim Seung-dae is only one behind. Lee Seung-woo of Suwon FC is third with 17. All three have healthy assist tallies, too; Na Sang-ho has four, Kim Seung-dae has six - just two fewer than leading assist maker Baek Sung-dong - and Lee Seung-woo has three.

1. Na Sang-ho, FC Seoul - 20
2. Kim Seung-dae, Pohang Steelers - 19
3. Lee Seung-woo, Suwon FC - 17

Passes to final third accuracy

Getting the ball through into the final third quickly and accurately can be the difference in building a solid attack and getting hit on the counter. Gwangju FC's Jung Ho-yeon knows that and has the best passes to final third accuracy in the league with 91.3%, so does Kim Ju-sung with nearly 87%, and veteran midfielder Lee Chung-yong at a touch over 85%.

1. Jung Ho-yeon, Gwangju FC - 91.3%
2. Kim Ju-sung, FC Seoul - 86.6%
3. Lee Chung-yong, Ulsan Hyundai - 85.3%

Deep completions

A deep completion is a non-cross pass into an area within 20 metres of goal. Ulsan's Valeri Qazaishvili has made more of these than anyone else in K League with 43, his East Coast Derby rival Zeca is second with 41, and the mercurial attacking midfielder Cesinha is third with 39.

1. Valeri Qazaishvili, Ulsan Hyundai - 43
2. Zeca, Pohang Steelers - 41
3. Cesinha, Daegu FC - 39

Attacking

Shooting accuracy

In front of goal, Daejeon Hana Citizen seem to have the most accurate forward players in the league with the top three in terms of shooting accuracy being Purples. Japanese attacking midfielder Masatoshi Ishida is first with 60%, the pacy winger Kim In-gyun is second with 58.3%, and young striker Jeon Byeong-kwan is third with 55.6%. In terms of their goal tallies, Masa has five, Kim has seven, and Jeon has two.

1. Masatoshi Ishida, Daejeon Hana Citizen - 60%
2. Kim In-gyun, Daejeon Hana Citizen - 58.3%
3. Jeon Byeong-kwan, Daejeon Hana Citizen - 55.6%

Touches in penalty area

Chances are that if you're in the opposition's penalty area, you are more likely to score. Proof of that is that the league's top scorer Joo Min-kyu has had the most touches in the box this season so far wth 101. Zeca, who has 10 and is most certainly in the golden boot race, has had 98, while Gerso has made 95.

1. Joo Min-kyu, Ulsan Hyundai - 101
2. Zeca, Pohang Steelers - 98
3. Gerso Fernandes, Incheon United - 95
